Whether you believe in virus's or that if you get cold symptoms it is all part of detox on a raw vegan diet. There is no denying this week I was unwell. I had temperature, cold sweats, tired, aches, loss of appetite and head aches. I am not someone who gets unwell very often these days and when I do my diet changes a lot during the time I feel unwell.
Most importantly when I am unwell I rest !! By resting my body it means all the energy I have can go towards healing and not my daily exercise and activities. This rest seems to speed up my healing time.
When I first feel any cold or flu symptoms come on I like to water fast for 24 -72 hours. This entails only drinking spring water (approx. 3 litres a day) for a couple of days. It is the best way I have found to speed up my bodies healing abilities. "We use anywhere between 15-30% of our calories just to run our digestive system." (Seven health, 2013) I like to think that by water fasting for a couple of days that I am simply taking away the burden of digestion while I heal and my body can use this extra energy for healing.
Once I finish a water fast I find when I am unwell my body craves lots of fruit. Fruits are full of vitamins, very hydrating and easy to digest in the body. "Fruit is high in carbohydrate and in general, carbohydrates tend to be more quickly digested than protein and fat." (Raw Food Education, 2014) . Fruit is therefore not as taxing as some other foods are on the body and this extra energy can be diverted to my healing.
I also crave when I am unwell tomatoes, carrots, oranges, lemons, ginger and chilli. These are all very high in vitamin C which is "....... involved in the body’s immune system by stimulating the activity of white blood cells." (Havard, 2020) I love that my body knows what it needs for optimal healing by craving foods high in vitamin C for a speedy recovery.
Some of my favourite comfort foods that I eat while while healing my body are my NEW raw. Simple tomato noodle soup , raw. Sticky chilli zoodles with avo & parsley and raw. Carrot and ginger soup (out in my new ebook soon). These soups are great and so easy to eat. There are more recipe ideas for 4 Raw Vegan Warm Winter Soup Recipes in a recent blog post I did.
Another favourite dish that I love when I am unwell is my raw. Napoletana fettuccine served with fresh basil, chilli, avocado & lemon which I also enjoyed a couple of times this week for dinner.
Another raw food I enjoyed while healing this weak were juices. I enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice and my raw. Immunity hit juice to get in some extra vitamins. Both of these juices are high in vitamin C so these are another great way to speed up my healing.
I have shared here some of the tings I do while healing and all the yummy healing foods that I enjoyed over this past week. I would love to hear below in the comments what you find helps you while you are not feeling well and want to heal?
